Treetop hideaways in England

Callow Hall is a country house hotel with an outdoorsy edge. In woodland beside the hotel you’ll find a collection of Hives, little treehouses that are basically wooden hotel rooms out in the elements. Each timber clad Hive has a balcony with views of the leaves, Callow Hall’s wild meadows and hills in the distance, plus everything you’d expect from the fanciest of hotel rooms: soft robes, lovely toiletries, a tiny kitchenette (complete with generous snack jar) and a cloud-like bed. Hive guests also benefit from all hotel facilities, like the Nordic sauna, treatment rooms, fire pit and complimentary bike rental. Buggies ferry you back and forth from the main hotel building if you don’t fancy staggering back from dinner in the dark through the trees.

These two scandi-inspired treehouses, on a former farm now turned over to wildflower meadow, blend in seamlessly with their rural surroundings. Both are tucked in the tree canopy and made out of locally sourced, sustainable wood. Both boast stunning views of the Devon countryside from their glass-fronted bathrooms and living spaces – and from the huge copper baths on the deck outside. And the views don’t stop there. Look skywards once you’ve climbed into bed to see stars twinkling and branches swaying overhead.

Fancy sleeping in a suspended wooden sphere? You can do just that on the edge of Bodmin Moor, where a small spherical bedroom hangs among the branches in a secluded stretch of woodland. On the ground below, you’ll find a spring-fed shower, a composting loo and a field kitchen to whip up an alfresco brekkie. If that all sounds a tiny bit too off grid for you, there’s a shipping container a few minutes’ walk through the trees where you’ll find charging points and a hair dryer.
