The 5 local specialities you must eat in Ghent

1) Mastellen

This is an old Ghent speciality traditionally eaten during festivals. It consists of a light bun cut in half and spread with cinnamon, butter and brown sugar. The two halves are then covered in aluminium foil and flattened with an iron. You can buy Mastellen, along with rye bread and a local current bread called roggebrood, at Himschoot, an old Ghent bakery founded back in 1906. It has branches in central Ghent, the station quarter and Dok Noord.
