5 giants of sports infrastructure in Havana
1) Coliseo de la Ciudad Deportiva
El Coliseo has become an urban landmark just because of its spectacular form. It also represents a milestone in terms of construction and is a showcase for the high-quality contracting work that was performed at the time. The stadium can seat up to 15.000 spectators. The audience can be evacuated in under ten minutes thanks to two wide ramps that lead to the ground level.
2) Nautical Club
The Nautical Club was built in the twenties. By the fifties, the membership had increased significantly, requiring the club to expand. Max Borges designed an enormous set of porticos covered by vaults. The architectonic structure is establishing an almost literal analogy with the waves of the sea nearby.
3) Estadio Panamericano
Inaugurated in 1991 for the Pan American games. Seating for up to 35.000 people.
4) Estadio Latinoamericano
This complex can accommodate up to 55.000 spectators and has coffee shops, conference rooms, broadcasting and press boxes and medical services. Baseball was introduced in Cuba at the end of the nineteenth century and is currently the most popular sport in the country. The stadium hosts National League matches and Cuba’s most important international games.
5) Sala Polivalente Kid Chocolate
This is one of the 67 especially built facilities for the Havana 1991 Pan American games. It was named after Eligio Sardeñas, also known as Kid Chocolate, Cuba’s finest boxer ever.
