5 places to buy fresh produce in Havana
1) Agromercado 19 Y B
Farmers who have supplied their quota to the government may sell their surplus produce in agromercados or farmer’s markets. This market sells fruit and vegetables as well as meat, rice and beans. One of the best-stocked open-air vegetable markets in the city.
2) Mercado Egido
You can buy flowers at the entrance and fruit and vegetables, beans, rice, honey, spices in the huge indoor market. There are painted inscriptions on the walls such as 'la arcilla fundamental de nuestra obra es la juventud'.
3) Agromercado 27 Y A
This is a mid-sized market in Vedado. Fruit and vegetables, fresh juice and fried food. So if you don’t have a kitchen grab some snacks here and enjoy a freshly squeezed mango juice as you stroll around the city. In Centro Habana you can head over to the agromercado en Ánimas entre Aramburu y Soledad.
4) Tulipan Market
This large market is situated to the south of Vedado, near Plaza de la Revolución. People travel from all over to come to this market because the prices are the cheapest here. There are also several independent streetfood vendors. In the morning you will often see people have their breakfast here on their way in to work.
5) Tienda de Marco Polo, El Camino de las Especias
This small shop sells various aromatic and medicinal herbs and spices. You can buy cumin (which is a popular ingredient with Habaneros), cinnamon, thyme and other herbs here to season your dishes. The mix of all these spices combines into an incredible scent, which wafts around the shop.
