5 hidden treasures in Berlin

1) The Black Lodge

Twin Peak fans, this one is for you. Did you know the Black Lodge really exists? Well, we’re here to tell you it does. You’ll find it in Kreuzberg, and it’s mysterious and funky. It’s also Lynchian and very affordable. But beware; this isn’t a Twin Peaks theme bar. Although they do serve damn good coffee.

2) Silent Green Kulturquartier

A former crematorium turned into a fancy cultural hub: only in Berlin! Concerts, expositions, guided tours and a cafe and cosy restaurant called Mars that also offers an excellent, healthy lunch. We especially love the picnic concerts on the lawn in summer.

3) Bar Zentral

You’ll find this sophisticated bar under the train tracks, just like the Gainsbourg or The Hat Bar a little further down the road. Cognac, whisky and champagne are the main players here. Expect a cultivated public, like in many of the venues in the Savignyplatz area. Try the Tristesse Royal cocktail: we guarantee it will not make you sad.

4) Alaska Bar

Welcome to vegan Berlin in the hip district of Neukölln. Come here for after-work tapas (Andalucian style, so they’re free if you buy a drink), Sunday brunch and vegan pop up events. Expect a flea market charm, cool music, cool people, lovely Spanish owners and very good prices.

5) Beth Café

In the middle of the old Jewish quarter, just around the corner of the synagogue at the Oranienburgerstrasse lies this beautiful cafe. You can come here for hummus, falafel or Matzeknödel or just to enjoy a coffee in the nice backyard. Closed in the evening.
