Must-visit ice-cream spots
1) Pavé Gelati & Granite
Milan, Italy
The team at Pavé has a growing fanbase, making the bakery at Via Casati 27 a must (and the NYTimes agrees). Recently they also won Three Cones from food mag Gambero Rosso for their ice creams. Try bread and butter 160 (as in 160 grams of apricots for 100 grams of jam), of course, named after their iconic brioche.
2) Murphy's Ice Cream
Dublin, Ireland
Murphy’s have been making their own brand of ice cream since 2000 in Dingle, Kerry, with a second home here in Dublin. There’s only two weeks of sunshine in Dublin all year round, but when the sun is finally out, queues are quick to form outside Murphy’s. The flavours like Dingle sea salt, Dingle gin, peanut and many more are unbelievable.
3) Gelateria Alaska
Venice, Italy
The artisan gelato shop par excellence. This hole in the wall produces only a few flavours, depending on which ingredients are available and in season. The ice cream is less sweet than others, as the ice-cream maker prefers to focus on the depth of flavour. Truly outstanding.
4) Over Langshaw Ice Cream
Edinburgh, Scotland
On a hot day (or not), this little police box in the heart of the Grass Market is a great place to stop, grab an ice cream and watch the world go by in one of the most fascinating parts of Edinburgh. The ice cream is made in the Scottish Borders at the Over Langshaw Farmhouse, and is flavoured with local seasonal berries and no artificial flavours. The farm is powered renewably by their turbine called ‘Winifred’ and the gooseberry sorbet is an awesome choice for vegans. Save yourself the wait at Mary’s Milk Bar, and report in at this wee police box.
5) Gelateria Brivido
Rome, Italy
There is plenty of gelato in Rome. There is even a decent amount of good gelato. The bar for good meaning no fluorescent shades and towering mountains of this favorite cold treat. What makes Gelateria Brivido, found in an unassuming storefront in Testaccio, outstanding is more than rigorously sourced ingredients and resounding Roman flavors like Gentilini, a beloved cookie. It is the trio of women behind the counter. Three generations from the neighborhood make and serve an ever-changing variety of creamy gelato, fruit dense cremolata, and icy granitas. All manner of dietary concerns are catered to here. There are vegan flavors and gluten-free cones.
6) Nicecream’s Vegan Ice Cream
Copenhagen, Denmark
There are an abundance of quality ice-cream and gelato shops around Copenhagen, and Nicecream boldly entered the city’s ice-cream scene in 2015. The shop boasts delicious and creative treats that are 100% vegan and made with organic, fair trade ingredients. And above all else? This place serves up incredible ice cream. You can’t go wrong with any of the flavors, but ask for a free taste of any scoop before finalizing your order. Bounty Hunter (coconut), Sneaky Bizz (peanut butter and chocolate) and Coffee are always great choices.
