5 restaurants that serve excellent Venetian-style fish in Venice
1) Osteria al Mascaron
A word to the wise: if you decide to eat in this tavern, don’t even bother looking at the menu. Find the eccentric owner and ask him for advice. If he likes you, you’ll eat the best fish that Venice has to offer (not to mention drink the best wine). This place is not really cheap but it’s worth every penny.
2) Venissa Osteria Contemporanea
This tavern has a menu full of amazing dishes for which it sources its ingredients exclusively from the islands in the lagoon. Even the wines are produced in extremely limited quantities and come from the only vineyard on the island of Mazzorbo. An excellent example of traditional cuisine with a contemporary twist and a restaurant that pays special attention to sustainability.

3) Luna Sentada
The philosophy of this wine bar and restaurant is quite intriguing, as it serves traditional Venetian cuisine albeit with a twist. The chef is inspired by Marco Polo’s travels, and the many aromas he encountered. Even the plating and the ambience are just slightly different from the typical tavern – just look at the splendid contemporary Murano glass chandelier at the entrance.
4) Osteria da Rioba
Walk by Mr Rioba’s statue in the adjacent Campo dei Mori and rub its nose: it will bring you good luck! Although more of a restaurant because of its attitude and menu, this tavern takes its name from the eponymous Venetian legend. The dishes are refined and well presented, the place is pleasant, and has outdoor tables. Excellent fish appetisers.
5) Ristorante Algiubagiò
Whether you stop for a quick breakfast before leaving for the islands, a light lunch, an aperitif overlooking the lagoon, or a fish dinner, this elegant restaurant ticks all the boxes. The menu features traditional dishes, as well as more contemporary options, and even a vegetarian alternative. Something for everyone.
