The 5 most lovely shops for children in Rotterdam

As children’s bookstores go, they don’t get much better than this. De Kleine Kapitein (the little captain) has a wide range of children’s books, picture books, fantasy and comics, a fantastic array of book-related toys and gifts, as well as a play corner for the kids.

Ver van hier (Far from here) combines a love of children’s books with a love of coffee. While the children are reading, sit down for an excellent cup of joe and a slice of cake. There are regular events for the little ones, like writing workshops or handicraft afternoons. They have a well stocked English department.

Two floors packed with everything a small child could ever wish for: from wooden toys, games and dress up clothes to books and dolls. This is the go-to shop in Hillegersberg if you’re looking for a nice gift.

Carrabas is one of the largest toy stores in Rotterdam, with lots of stuffed toys, board games, quizzes, science tests, magic sets, tricycles, doll’s houses and handicrafts. Two entrepreneurial mums, who were unhappy with the creative and sustainable toys on offer, opened this shop in 2006 and recently moved to this new location.

Named after the famous children’s book The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, this is first and foremost a bookstore, but you’ll also find toys, games and some vintage interior items in this lovely shop. Owner Peggy Mulder has created a welcoming local hub for children and adults alike.
