5 shops for surf, skate & cycling in Porto

Surfer and artist Ivo Nisa opened the first 58 Surf shop two decades ago in the surf town of Peniche. With three branches in Portugal, including this one in Matosinhos, this is where many surfers and skaters choose to purchase their gear. Recently Ivo has created his own range of boards, Mar Surfboards.

GRUA Surf Co. was founded by local surfer Diogo Lamares. His spacious shop in Matosinhos has a cool vibe with its polished concrete floors and minimalist look. The stylish collection is geared not only for sea lovers but also for adventure and travel enthusiasts. There’s a lounge area with a coffee machine.

As a leader in surfing wetsuits, the Australian brand Rip Curl needs no introduction. Their branch in Matosinhos is conveniently located just in front of the beach, with a variety of rental and purchase options. They stock their own collection, alongside other brands such as Channel Islands, Polen and Pyzel Surfboards.

Cycling fans will feel at home here. Velo Culture was founded by three friends with a passion for sustainability and biking. They stock a gorgeous selection of bikes and accessories, which includes niche brands. They also offer repair services and love refurbishing classic bikes. There are two branches, one in Matosinhos Market and another near Palácio de Cristal.

Chelo Coast House is a spot for ‘Café, Cycles & Surf’. Owners Marie and Marcelo met in Chile while on a cycling trip and later decided to make Matosinhos their new home. The coffee shop is really lovely. In the same space they sell Patagonia surf gear alongside their own urban bicycle brand Chelo Cycles, offering customisation options.
