Beautiful terraces to eat al fresco
1) Lapa Lapa
Porto, Portugal
This spot has a colonial-style decked outdoor terrace and indoor section overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The menu has a bit of everything for everyone, from seafood, meat, healthy bowls, tartare and pizzas to more surprising dishes such as the homemade muxama de atum (salt-cured tuna), a delicacy from the Algarve.

2) Mandolin Aegean Bistro
Miami, United States
In 2009, husband-and-wife team Ahmet Erkaya and Anastasia Koutsioukis reconditioned a house to fashion this mostly outdoor Greek-Turkish restaurant. You can’t help but be seduced by the dips and salads, kebabs, moussaka and whole grilled fish as you dine under the large shade trees that have been there since the 1940s.

3) La Terrazza
Rome, Italy
La Terrazza has a view of the Colosseum. But what makes this terrace special is how it’s nuzzled into the surrounding Medieval landscape. You don’t tower over the nearby churches of San Clemente and Quattro Coronati; you feel welcomed by them at eye level, surrounded by the flowers that ring the terrace edge.

4) De Kop van 't land
Dordrecht, Netherlands
If you really need a break, then go to De Kop van ’t Land, an inn on the outskirts of Biesbosch, which is just a short bike ride from Dordrecht, where you will be well and truly pampered. Surprising flavour combinations, beautifully dressed Michelin-quality dishes, and extremely friendly waiters. Once you’ve eaten your fill, you can take a nice brisk walk along the dike or spend the night in the inn.

5) Erba Brusca
Milan, Italy
A garden tucked away at the end of the Naviglio, where the city becomes the countryside. With a table, under a pergola on hot, sunny days, where you can enjoy the cooking of Alice Delcourt, which is as fragrant as the vegetables and the greens from her garden. After eating, you can take one of the bikes for a spin around the area.

6) Gallow Green
New York, United States
Total scene above the place famous for the immersive theater experience Sleep No More. Less about views and more about a lush escape from the city. Decked out in greenery and backyard patio lights in summer, dolled up like a log cabin in winter – with amazing attention to detail. Earlier is better, if you want to gain access.

7) Faim Fatale
Ghent, Belgium
This is a charming little restaurant located in a 19th-century town house with an open fire in the winter. The chef comes up with creative dishes using unexpected ingredients. There is even a little garden at the back for summer evenings.

8) North Pond
Chicago, United States
This exquisite fine dining restaurant in lovely Lincoln Park is accessible via a serene walking path. It’s housed in a 1912 ice skating warming shelter pristinely restored in the arts and crafts style. Views of the surrounding park are stunning year round, and both brunch and dinner experiences are built around tasting menus.
