5 kid-friendly museums and institutions in Chicago
1) Art Institute of Chicago
Surprisingly approachable for the smallest patrons. Kids under 14 are free, and the maze of rooms and hallways mean there is plenty of stroller space and room to teeter around. Pint-sized favorites include the airy Modern Wing and the enthralling Thorne Miniature Rooms in the basement.
2) Museum of Science & Industry
Scale-model cities, a real submarine, flight simulators, a baby chick hatchery – there’s a lot going on at the biggest science museum in the Western hemisphere. Permanent exhibits range from the art of the bicycle to the world’s largest pinball machine, and seasonal programming means there’s always something happening same-day.

3) The Field Museum
This beautiful century-old museum is the home of one of Chicago’s best known celebrities: Sue, the largest, most complete T-Rex skeleton in the world. Named for its discoverer, Sue is a must-see for budding archeologists and dino lovers. In roomy exhibits, all sorts of animals, plants, and other specimens of the natural world are displayed.
4) Shedd Aquarium
With panoramic views of the lake, the Shedd opened in 1930 as one of the largest aquariums in the world, and today fosters a whopping 32.000 sea creatures. Don’t miss the smiling beluga whales nor the playful sea otters, whose tiered-height tanks offer multiple viewpoints.
5) Hyde Park Art Center
This admission-free art center has a welcoming, no-nonsense approach. Rotating exhibitions showcase a range of engaging works – including an annual teen show – and the large installation spaces allow for room to stretch. The lovely cafe is a great respite for snack time and bathroom breaks.
