Fantastic spots for vegetarian food
1) Meatless District
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Meatless District is a 100% vegan restaurant with a menu that changes with the seasons. It serves lunch, snacks, diner, and breakfast on the weekend. Think tasty pastas, salads and burgers, among others. They also have a good beer selection.
2) Joia
Milan, Italy
The first meat-free restaurant, serving ‘vegetarian haute cuisine’, to receive a Michelin star twenty years ago. Pietro Leemann, the chef and owner, has continued to apply this same philosophy that he is happy to share with customers. The restaurant has a less formal branch, called Il bistrot del Joia.
3) Ataya Caffe
Berlin, Germany
Elisabette (a chef born in Sardinia) and Bachir (a musician born in Senegal) are the owners of this lovely living-room-style cafe in fancy Prenzlauer Berg. A unique place where Italy meets Africa and where the plates are as colourful as that mix sounds. Their Sunday brunch is to die for, but make sure to make a reservation a few days ahead to be sure of a spot.
4) Blossom
New York, United States
Totally vegan, but Blossom’s menu also appeals to those not following an all-plant diet. The chopped Caesar Salad’s crispy shiitake mushrooms taste just like bacon, adding a bit of crunch and lots of wow. The menu includes an unusual mix of veggie-focused dishes with seitan, the beyond burger, and a dynamite pesto pizza. Another location on the Upper West Side.
5) Guenmaï
Paris, France
At Guenmaï organic is not just another flash marketing word but a real philosophy as you can tell by the large sign on the window: la santé par l’alimentation (achieving health through food). This place looks nothing like a doctor’s office. In fact you might even say there is something charming about the wicker chairs and the tiny terrace. The food is colourful and tasty.
6) Gracias Madre
San Francisco, United States
Here you’ll find tasty Mexican vegan food made with organic, plant-based, and non-GMO ingredients. Cheeses and milks are made from nuts. And tortillas and tamales are handmade from heirloom corn. The menu is seasonally focused using fresh, sustainable, and locally grown produce.
7) De Kop van 't land
Dordrecht, Netherlands
If you really need a break, then go to De Kop van ’t Land, an inn on the outskirts of Biesbosch, which is just a short bike ride from Dordrecht, where you will be well and truly pampered. Surprising flavour combinations, beautifully dressed Michelin-quality dishes, and extremely friendly waiters. Once you’ve eaten your fill, you can take a nice brisk walk along the dike or spend the night in the inn.
8) The Green Affair
Lisbon, Portugal
This fine-dining restaurant serves vegan food in a beautiful setting, which sets it apart from all the other healthy-food restaurants in town. The attention to presentation is particularly interesting and got them considerable acclaim. The original restaurant is just off Avenida da República and another outlet opened in Chiado.
